nowhere man

naoto takenaka, japan, 1991

A Japanese Comic book artist discovers the beauty of found rocks, and decides to sell his rocks near the river. On the surface this is a funny movie, but it tends to the serious questions of trying to dull the pain of wanting to be a genius, and of the futility of art.

Shorts

  • Electrocute your Stars with George Kuchar, by Marie Losier
  • Bird, Bath and Beyond with Mike Kuchar, by Marie Losier

gummo

Harmony Korine, usa, 1997

A collage of still and moving images. You are dropped into an alien world in the middle of Ohio. Boy's fantasy play shows all the range of human cruelty, and apathy. Keen observations of human characters. Kind of a documentary of everyday people but there are no explanations, everything lies in the details.

Shorts

  • Alliance for Progress by Yuji Oshima
  • Laundromat by Catherine Ross
  • Rooftop Drumming by Sebastien Sanz de SantaMaria

sans soleil

Chris Marker, french, 1982

Slide show of memories, from Japan, Africa and Iceland. Images of travel, and festivals, linking Japan and Africa. Chris Marker's amazing talent is in the timing of the images and sound, you are lulled into his observations.

Playtime

Jacques Tati, France, 1967

One of the best soundtracks in all Cinema. A specially constructed sterile nothing-ville is filled with a ballet of movement and hysterical observations of cultural stereotypes, especially the disconnect that a tourist or observer of culture feels when the whole world seems alien and wonderful.

Performance

  • Sebastien Sanz de Santamaria and Marie Losier
